  • Canadian Air Defense Sector Members Complete Training at WADS

    The Western Air Defense Sector hosted 11 air battle managers of the Royal Canadian Air Force for a five week period this fall in order to complete their qualification training. The air battle managers were deployed from 3 Wing and 22 Wing of the RCAF.
  • Confined space exercise at WADS power plant

    The Western Air Defense Sector conducted an arc flash injury exercise inside the WADS power plant Nov. 13, 2018. The exercise was designed to help the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Fire Department become accustom to working safely around the WADS unique power plant equipment and practice confined space rescue procedures.
  • WADS annual award winners announced

    The winners of the 2018 Western Air Defense Sector annual awards were announced during a ceremony Dec. 1, 2018. The nominees for each award category were the winners of their respective unit annual awards. The WADS is made up of the 225th Air Defense Group, 225th Air Defense Squadron and 225th Support Squadron.
  • NORAD commander thanks WADS for actions after plane stolen near Seattle

    The NORAD and USNORTHCOM commander arrived at Joint Base Lewis-McChord Aug. 23 to personally thank the men and women of the Western Air Defense Sector for their quick actions when a Horizon Bombardier Q400 commercial plane was stolen from SeaTac International Airport Aug. 10.

  • WADS Welcomes New Canadian Detachment Commander

    The Canadian Detachment at the Western Air Defense Sector officially changed command Tuesday. Lt. Col. Michael Fawcett assumed command from Lt. Col. Matthew Wappler, who finished a three-year tour of duty as the Canadian Detachment commanding officer. Fawcett’s responsibilities will include leading the 15-member Canadian Detachment and serving as part of the WADS staff. Wappler is transferring to 1 Canadian Air Division in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as the senior staff officer for Aerospace Capabilities and Readiness.

    While a large portion of the world tuned in Sunday for Super Bowl LI to watch the New England Patriots take on the Atlanta Falcons, the Western Air Defense Sector was busy guarding the skies over NGR Stadium in Houston, Texas, as part of NORAD’s Operation Noble Eagle air defense mission.

WADS hosted 60 civilian employers during last week’s ESGR Washington Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Bosslift. Employers flew an air refueling mission with the 141st Air Refueling Wing KC-135s, toured WADS and the 262nd Cyberspace Operations Squadron.
